Rob Ronald was not the first individual to take Shaolin Kenpo from Rick and Maria Warwick. He was, however, the first individual to reach the rank of Black Belt under their tutelage. He started training approximately 6 months after John Delia, Wayne Toy and Dick Landberg. At the time he started training, he was 16 years old. He received his Black Belt at age 19 in early 1973.
Rob Ronald progressed quickly through the ranking system and did so in part by taking private lessons from Rick Warwick. Ron alluded to the fact, somewhat tongue-in-cheek that "John Delia started training before I did, but then he met a girl in college."
Rob also recounted at least one road trip with Rick and Maria Warwick in a Volkswagen bus to attend the California Karate Championships facilitated by Great Grandmaster Ralph Castro. During that visit he was able to meet with Senior Grandmaster Ed Parker and was in awe of the speed and power on display.
Rob states that his parents rented out the Nordic Inn for his Black Belt ceremony and all students and their families were invited to attend. Ron stated the pageantry for this event was very over-the-top. Check back here frequently to see if Rob has found the photos he has of this event.
After receiving his Black Belt from Rick and Delores(Maria) Warwick, Rob opened a small school in the neighboring town of Hoquiam. This school was located oddly enough in the same building now owned by Shaolin Kenpo Black Belt Al Carter on Simpson Avenue. The opening of this school caused some friction with Maria Warwick who held steadfastly to Ralph Castro's system of Kenpo and per Rob Ronald, was not a fan of competition for students. Rob stated that this school was only in operation for approximately one year.
Rob would soon move from Grays Harbor to other parts of Washington State, opening small schools that trained his workmates wherever his travels took him. He lived near Steamboat Island for about 25 years before moving to the North River area.
Rob has stated his intention to return to Shaolin Kenpo in short order so that he can create a version of himself he is more happy with. On a personal note, Rob raised four daughters which potentially is why he started taking Martial Arts in the first place.
